Feelings are much like waves
we can't stop them
but we can choose which one to surf.
All of us need help at times when we feel confusion, turmoil or conflict. Life's problems may seem overwhelming, we may lose purpose and meaning finding it impossible to decide on the best course of action. Speaking to a counsellor or coach may help to resolve or clarify the issue and assist us in moving forward.
I believe that my counselling experience and life coaching skills complement each other. They enable me to identify emotional, physical and practical blocks that are preventing clients from moving forward. Using my knowledge and training I work integratively, adapting my approach to individual clients and in conjunction with them devise a treatment or action plan, to help empower them to start tackling the problem and to take the first steps towards change and a happier life.
Sessions last typically an hour and are usually face to face but may be over the phone.
Counselling is a shared process. It is a professional relationship between a trained counsellor and the client. It is a place where, in confidence, a person can tell their story in order to help them clarify their views of their life space and learn to make adjustments or changes through meaningful, well informed choices, and resolution of problems. As a counsellor I will help you explore and pursue personal aims in a supportive environment. Whilst the focus is on the present issues you feel are important, it may also involve exploring the past and its influence on your life.
There is no minimum or maximum number of sessions offered for counselling as I feel it is important for the client to be in control and to work at their own pace.
Typical issues helped by counselling are: Anxiety, Stress, Loss, Bereavement, Relationship issues, Self Esteem and Identity issues.
Coaching has a more structured approach. A core principle of coaching is to identify where you are, decide where you want to be, when, and then to create a plan to get there. The Coach is a sounding board for wise decision making, lending objectivity and support, helping the client identify and accomplish their personal and professional goals faster than they could on their own. Together they form measurable goals, develop Action Plans and specific strategies for overcoming problems.
Clients are usually asked to sign up for an agreed, minimum number of coaching sessions, normally 4/6, to allow time for plans to develop and progress.
Who is it for? It is for people who want to live a better life, to perform at a higher level, to achieve balance in their work and life, to keep on the right track, to bring about change and to increase chances of long term success.
My background is in management and counselling, working in Public Service as a project manager. During this period I completed several counselling courses, qualified as an Emotional Therapist and also as a Life Coach. In 2000 I decided to go to university as a mature student, studying systemic counselling, exploring family dynamics and the influences of our upbringing and environment on our lives. Additionally I worked as a volunteer bereavement support worker and supervisor for 6 years as I have an interest in the impact of all forms of loss and bereavement.
I have been in private practice since 2003 and am committed to helping individuals perform to their highest level in order to live a happier, more fulfilled life.
I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and adhere to their Code of Ethics and undertake regular supervision and training
